Pungent and peppery, this racy plant is immortalized in an ancient poem ascribed to Virgil entitled Moretumwhich contains the line, “the rocket excites the sexual desire of drowsy people.” Oh my.
Epic origin: Mediterranean
Planting Instructions: Arugula is best seeded directly to garden in early spring or fall. Sow on bands of 30 to 50 seeds per foot at 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. It prefers cool weather and can be overwintered in many areas.
