This Italian heirloom made its way to the United States in the mid 19th century. It has a lighter red colored skin and candy cane striped rings through the root. Tender skin and good flavor, very sweet.
Planting Instructions: You can begin sowing beets in the garden when temperatures have warmed. Sow around 15 seeds per foot in rows 8-12 inches apart at a depth of a half-inch. Thin beets to 1 every few inches for larger beets, or simply thin as you harvest eating the baby beets as you go. For a continuous supply, beets can be planted every couple of weeks until around 8 weeks before the first hard frosts.
